Legally blonde
This saturday movie is my favourite one! <3
Class, is everybody in attendance? I’m going to check. This is a long one… so buckle up.
Today is Saturday, which means movie night! (at least it was starting to get written then)
Let’s discuss my favourite piece of media ever made. Yes, it’s “Legally Blonde”… I have my reasons… You will soon understand why I think it’s basically perfection as an inspirational story. Specially for young girls.
In the beginning of the movie you see the life that Elle Woods has so far, she comes from a very privileged background. First of all, she is the president of her sorority… which means she has a lot of connections. Many friends, many parties to attend — basically really popular at college. Elle has two b.f.f.s who are honestly adorable and a charming little dog that always goes with her. Other people love her, admire her — she has a strong support system.
Yet her daily routine does not seem to be affected by social outings, she is top of her class as well. In fashion merchandising, I’m guessing is a similar degree to business. Basically Elle knows what she is talking about in terms of clothes, materials, manufacturing processes — she proves it to us when fighting over a dress with a store clerk. Noticing details that others would overlook.
Even though she must be always busy, she still has time to take care of herself. Manicures, pedicures, clothing, make-up, hair… She is honestly gorgeous, has a strong sense of style — Elle always looks appropriately dressed for the occasion. She sparkles like a diamond nicely polished.
Talking about that… she wants one, just for herself. Her future has already been made up, at least in her mind. She will marry a handsome boy from a prominent family, Warner Huntington III. Have his children and live the happily ever after she has always dreamed of.
But he has another plans… The slimy little weasel says that she is too blonde. He implies that he needs a Jackie instead of a Marilyn. He is indeed not going to marry her, shocker I know. The worst part about it, she thought that he was going to propose… not break up.
Poor little Elle is distraught, is he thinking that she is not good enough for him? She crashes out in the middle of the restaurant.
And for the following weeks her life is just that, crash out. Watching endless romance movies while eating ice-cream and chocolate. That’s until everyone in her sorority house decides to team up and cheer her up.
Her two b.f.f.s take her to a nail salon, she is in definite need of a manicure… While she is waiting at the parlour she discovers that her ex’s brother is going to marry some stuck up bitch. They are both law students, so Elle has an idea.
She decides right then that she should also study law at Harvard, that way she can finally prove Warren her worth. She can also be a book worm, why not? She goes to the counsellor at her university, and technically they could accept her — Elle has a really nice GPA.
If she had a 175 score on the LSAT, had letters of recommendation from her teachers and a good entry essay, she could go there! She becomes determined to achieve that.
How? You may ask…. Elle skips a bunch of parties to study real hard. And ends up having a famous director create a tape that shows her bubbly personality. Talk about rich parents, whom… they are supportive but wonder why she wants to attend — They say she is too pretty for Harvard.
Well… Harvard doesn’t think so, she gets accepted! Despite some concerns about her introductory tape, she manages to convince them through effort alone. She earns her place at one of the most prestigious universities in the world.
After a party thrown by her sorority sisters, she collects her things and transfers to Massachusetts. With her pink convertible, her chihuahua and the trendiest outfit from the 00’s — Elle for sure makes a scene on moving day. She has her own room, but people don’t believe she is going there at all, and Greek life seems to be dead as well.
She does meet new people at Harvard, but they seem to be so different from her.
David Kidney who ha a masters in Russian literature, a PhD in biochemistry and has been helping orphans in Somalia.Enid who has a PD in women’s studies, and is a lesbian activist. And lastly Aaron Mitchell who graduated first of his class from Princeton.
They all seem to be serious and respectable students, meanwhile Elle does not seem to fit in the crowd. She tells her accomplishments and everyone thinks that she is some dumb blonde, they look at her weirded out.
She bumps into Warner at the hallways, and pretends she forgot that he goes to this school. He is awe, not believing her, and she tells her iconic phrase. “What, like it’s hard?”. She continues talking to him like nothing happened, like they didn’t broke up — and asks him to meet outside after class.
She soon has her first class, where she is called out, and does not know the answer. The teacher asks a girl in the back, if she should leave because she didn’t read the material for that day. The girl reprimands her and insists that she actually does some homework.
After a heated discussion she leaves the class, finding herself fuming in a bench by the entrance. There she complains to a guy, who tells her that the teacher is ruthless so she better prepare. He tells her some tips about the other teachers, one likes opinionated people, another has a lisp — to always look at the footnotes to be prepared for exams.
When they were about to deepen the conversation, the weasel boy appears. Ugh. She is telling him about the girl who kicked her out when she sees a rock on that very girl’s finger.
Elle meets Warren’s new girlfriend, well… fiance. Her name is Vivian. The three words that come out when I want to describe her are: serious, acid and jealous. She is everything he mentioned, a serious law student, someone he can marry with. The stark contrast between the two characters is revealing. Maybe he always saw Elle like a fling, instead of a partner.
Surely that Vivian flaunts her ring anytime she can, does not help. The only thing poor Elle can do is go get her manicure done. There she meets Paulette, the manicurist… she spills the beans about everything that happened to her. She empathizes with her, she tells Elle her story, how she also has been left for another girl as well. And the miserable man also took her dog away.
Paulette has wandering eyes for the mailman, and drops water onto the table. She thinks that she should steal Warner back. Elle smiles complicit.
The next day she gets called out again, it also goes south — Vivian of course answers correctly the question. All while showing that stupid little ring.
Now she is determined, she sunbathes in front of the guys playing rugby, offering herself to him. She also tries to join the study group, but Vivian doesn’t allow it. Humiliated she tries to call her girls, one of them is choosing wedding dresses and tells her to come home for her.
She overhears the people in the hallway getting invited to a party, so she asks Vivian if she can also join. She tells her it’s okay, but that she should come in costume as everyone else.
Decided, as always, she goes dressed as a play bunny… out of all things. She gets humiliated, but still decides to find Warner. Once she talks to him he finds amusing that she is trying join the internship one of the teachers offered. She obviously gets offended and scoffs at him, she did the same test, the same essay… Why can’t she also get the internship?
She leaves the party fuming, in the same outfit. Elle drives to the town and gets all the supplies she actually needs for school, like a laptop. She starts to study her ass off, but she finds out that making friends is not as easy. Yet David is nice to her in the library.
Now that she is actually doing her homework she can answer correctly in class. She has become a monster, studying while she works out, getting her hair done, every time she gets a chance she studies.
She can tackle any problem, Elle also uses her wits to get the Paulette’s dog back. She pretends to be her lawyer and throws around legal jargon words. And surprisingly it works.
While in class, she actually makes a well thought out point. The teacher notices and asks her for her resume, he wants her to join the internship. She obviously has a pink and scented resume, how could she not have it? It ends up being a good luck charm, she actually got the job.
Her first case is a murder trial, her client is Brook Taylor, suspected of killing her husband. She is a aerobics instructor, and has her own empire of training DVDs. Yet the teacher thinks that she is guilty, a gold digger. He has two witness testimonials, the pool boy and the husband’s daughter from a previous marriage.
She meets the guy that helped her out the first day, it turns out to be the Teaching Assistant and a partner at the teacher’s firm, his name is Emmett. They share a moment when she realizes he has been helping her all along.
Sorry this post was too long to share in one, so I’ve decided to divide it… Hope you enjoyed it! Check the next post for the ending 😊

Intriguing retrospective on legally blonde.I really like your style of writing.
I actually really adore the depth of legally blonde, because it’s advertised as the opposite. (The musical on the other hand,..not so much lmao)
Good read!
